Fingerprints

Fingerprints publishes original books for the visually impaired.

The books published are in Braille and include tactile illustrations.

Aims

To produce quality books

Fingerprints was established January 2004 with the purpose of creating quality books for the visually impaired.

The text of the books are original or retellings of classic tales. The tactile illustrations are designed to be accessible and understandable to a blind person. Different media will be used to increase the tactile variation of illustrations.

Books available free of charge or at a reasonable cost

This aim is to increase the amount of recreational reading for the visually impaired. Tactile illustrations require careful design and testing, and are expensive to produce. This has been a hindrance in the production and availability of tactile books.

Fingerprints' books will be designed by volunteers. Contributions to production means will be sought through institutions and other interest groups who's aim is to promote the well-being and potential of the visually impaired. When it is otherwise not possible to offer the books free of charge will the book be similar in cost of a children's book

To produce "including books" books that both sighted and visually impaired can enjoy together

An important aim is to design books that can be read by both blind and the sighted together. So that a blind parent can read a book together with his/her sighted child or two school children, one blind the other sighted sitting next to each other enjoying a good read.
